SONG KNOWLEDGE

with Anne Le Bozec and Natasha Loges
17 to 19 February 2025
Kammermusiksaal, Staatl. Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart
Pauline Viardot (1821 – 1910), Elsa Barraine (1910–1999), Rita Strohl (1865–1941), Clara Faisst (1872–1948), Luisa-Adolpha Le Beau (1850–1927), Margarete Schweikert (1887–1957) –these six names have two things in common above all: they are great female composers who left behind an extensive oeuvre of songs (and not only that) - and who hardly ever appear in concert programmes, either during their lifetime or today, or who, in some cases, receive little or no attention in the music world. or in some cases are paid far too little or hardly any attention in the music world. This course aims to change both!
The 46. Stuttgarter Meisterklasse für Lied is therefore dedicated exclusively to these six female song composers, their lives, their work and their influence. The lecturers are two very special women who have been campaigning for many years for equal recognition and acceptance of female composers. and acceptance of female composers in musical life: the award-winning song pianist Anne Le Bozec and the musicologist Prof. Dr Natasha Loges.
REPERTOIRE
8 - 10 songs by the above-mentioned composers of your own choice; for the third day of the course, songs by Pauline Viardot are to be prepared, including at least two Mörike settings.
Information on the composers and their creation of art songs can be found here.
All applicants who have been admitted to active course participation must also submit a concept for a recital programme before the course (by 1 February 2025).
Sheet music for the songs of the composers mentioned can be provided on request.
Two lecturers - three course days - two centuries - six composers - two languages
At the centre of this Stuttgarter Meisterklasse für Lied are female song composers from the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century, above all the French composer Pauline Viardot, who, born in 1821 and died in 1910, lived through almost an entire century. Between 1863 and 1870, Pauline Viardot lived in Baden-Baden, where she made a decisive contribution to the development of the spa town into a cultural centre of the time. Pauline Viardot composed well into old age: Over a period of more than six decades, she wrote around 250 compositions in various genres, with songs for one or more voices with piano accompaniment taking up the largest share. Natasha Loges, who is currently working on a major Viardot monograph, is a specialist who will introduce the life and work of Pauline Viardot. Particular attention will be paid to Pauline Viardot's Mörike settings, the majority of which are still unpublished (some unperformed).
